Fatal Fury is one of the two game series where Mai Shiranui appears. While it’s hard to believe, this game was introduced all the way back in 1991. The first version of this game was called Fatal Fury: King of Fighters. While this game had over ten different characters in it, Mai Shiranui was not one of them. However, this beautiful but powerful women was introduced in Fatal Fury 2. Thanks to the popularity of the first Fatal Fury, this second game was released shortly afterwards in 1992. In addition to the appearance of Mai Shiranui, one of the best things about this game was that it had better graphics than the original. Additionally, it also provided more control over the fighters. While the first Fatal Fury only allowed players to choose from one of three characters to control, this version offered eight different options, with Mai Shiranui being one of them.
Thanks to the popularity of Mai Shiranui in Fatal Fury 2, she was featured in the next eight versions of this game. These versions were released between 1993 (Fatal Fury Special) and 1998 (Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers). Other than the original, the only time Mai Shiranui didn’t appear in a Fatal Fury game was in the last release. This release was the 1999 Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
In addition to the series of games, the popularity of these games lead to the series being adapted into three different animated movies. Mai Shiranui’s first onscreen appearance was in Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle.
